Centuries-old time capsule being removed from State House... [View all]

The capsule is believed to contain artifacts that date to 1795 when it was first buried under the cornerstone of the building by Governor Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and William Scollay, based on records found by the Patrick administration detailing a ceremony when the capsule was buried.

The capsule was last unearthed during emergency repairs to the State House in 1855. It was put back in place when the cornerstone was reset.

Officials showed one of the coins to a gaggle of reporters who were observing. It was silver-colored but it was not legible. Hatchfield also showed a cellphone photo of the box she had taken from her vantage point underneath the block. The photo showed a green box.
