A part-time bookkeeper has been sentenced to prison for stealing $419,000 from her former employer, the Wilmington company, Inc.
From 2015 until her termination in 2018, Michelle Higson, of Georgetown, stole a series of the companys checks and made them payable to herself and her husband by forging her employers signatures, prosecutors said. She then cashed and deposited the checks.
To avoid detection by the company, Higson put entries in the companys books to make it appear as if the stolen checks had been issued to satisfy payment to actual vendors.
Higson also inflated her pay and falsified time sheets to increase the number of hours she worked, prosecutors said.
