Westbound I-20 in Jackson closing 4 days for bridge repair [View all]

JACKSON, Miss. — People driving from Atlanta to Dallas might expect a traffic snarl around Mississippi’s capital city next week.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation says the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 in Jackson are scheduled to be closed from 10 p.m. April 28 until 6 a.m. May 1 so workers can repair a bridge.

Trash fires under a bridge in 2012 and 2014 damaged its concrete deck and steel girders. MDOT executive director Melinda McGrath says the fires were set by vagrants.

She says keeping that section of I-20 open during repairs would take three months and cost significantly more money.

Westbound drivers can take a detour by going up I-55 north to reach the I-220 bypass around Jackson. That will add about 16 miles.
