Blizzard shifted north, state workers buried [View all]

While they got more than 40 inches in some spots, residents of New York’s six northernmost counties are still puzzling over how they were left out of the forecast until what seemed like the last minute during Tuesday’s epic snowstorm.

And state employees in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Lewis, Franklin, Clinton and Essex counties are still upset that they had to come to work — since in many cases, they quickly turned around and drove home when they realized how bad the weather was getting.

“Where has anybody said anything about what happened up here?” asked Patrick Schnell who lives in the Essex County community of Keeseville.

An employee of SUNY Plattsburgh, Schnell was among those workers who were required to show up on the job Tuesday morning or lose accrued vacation time.
