even if they are kept off of the ballot in places like South Carolina, and get walloped in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Unless the courts invalidate the recently enacted law (and they definitely could, especially considering this SCOTUS), or Trump releases his tax returns, one of the non-Trumps will win the CA primary. That's a lot of delegates, and will make them seem more competitive than they really are for quite a few news cycles -- news cycles in which other states' primaries will be taking place.
