Early voting begins in El Paso runoff for mayor, City Council; low turnout expected [View all]

Early voting is underway in El Paso's municipal runoff election, but current numbers indicate that voters aren't eager to go to the polls.

After the first two days of early voting, just over 6,700 ballots had been cast in the runoff election that will decide five seats on the El Paso City Council, as well as who will lead City Hall as mayor for the next four years. Just a month ago, when voters began casting early ballots for the General Election, roughly 40,000 ballots had already been cast after the first two days.

"Runoff elections are historically very low turnout," said El Paso County Elections Administrator Lisa Wise in an email. "The previous turnout for a similar election was about 13% in December 2020. However, that election offered 12 days of early voting while this election only offers nine days of early voting due to legislative changes."

The early voting session kicked off Monday, Dec. 3, and comes to a close on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Election Day will follow that Saturday, Dec. 14, with polls open across the city until 7 p.m.
