Wyoming couple suspected of grooming young girl to perform sex acts [View all]
Casper police arrested a couple Friday on suspicion of grooming the underage daughter of a family friend to perform sexual acts.
Lenard Smiley, 45, and his wife, Sonya Smiley, 50, were arrested Friday. Lenard Smiley was charged Monday in Natrona County Circuit Court with five counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor. Sonya Smiley was charged with one count of accessory to second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and three counts of third-degree sexual abuse of a minor.
The girl told her parents that the Smileys had been sexually abusing her while she lived with them in their house on the 900 block of East 13th Street intermittently between May 2015 and May 2016, according to court documents.
The girl, who was born in 2000, told police that she met the couple through a group in Casper that re-enacts 16th-century European history and considered them family friends. The girl told police that the Smileys would buy her gifts when she stayed with them. After several months, the couple told her she needed to do something for them in exchange for the gifts, the documents say.
