1. Banned for life seems rather extreme when they can buy many of the products here in the States

I would treat it like stuff in airport carryon bags. If it is found to be prohibited you have the option of tossing it, consuming it, etc.
I chose to toss a jar of peanut butter once. My sister stopped to the side to finish off some guacamole! (TSA guy said it was considered a gel!). I have seen people toss bottled water and even costly perfume/lotions to make their flights.
