24. Kerry would make as good a Defense Secretary as Secretary of State. That said, though...

I hope the position(s) will be offered by the Obama Administration very publicly, and declined by Kerry just as publicly, citing the precarious Senate majority. While we are in good standing right now in the Senate, 2014 will be a massacre if they're not prepared to defend numerous Dems who will be up for reelection. So every seat we have now counts to holding on to a really slim majority.

Still, if it has to happen that JK accepts either position, Patrick needs to appoint himself to the vacant seat AND run in the subsequent special election.
