This is a serious visit. It's one thing to visit Ross Island. It's a whole other thing to go to the research station at the South Pole. And, as the State Dept. press release said:

He will be the first Secretary of State and the most senior U.S. government official to ever travel to Antarctica.

At McMurdo Station he will meet with scientists and researchers studying a wide range of subjects in the extreme south of the planet, including climate change. He will also see firsthand part of the recently established Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area, the world’s largest marine protected area (1.55 million square kilometers or 598,000 square miles). The Secretary will be hosted by the U.S. National Science Foundation, which manages the U.S. Antarctic program.

Bravo, Sec. Kerry. And safe travels.
