Anti-Abortion Images Go Beyond Free Speech [View all]

The horrifically named Genocide Awareness Project, also known as GAP, came on campus on Monday and Tuesday bearing banners portraying graphic images of aborted fetuses next to those of victims of genocide. The organization's display was set up on Fairfield Way, a central location on campus right next to the Student Union. This meant that anyone walking in the center of campus had no choice but to see these images. Additionally, the group had a truck with an image of an aborted fetus that was driven around campus.

Protesters gathered on Tuesday to try and reason with GAP members, asking that they at least take into consideration the emotional health of students, but they refused to stop displaying these images. This showed that they don't actually want to have an informed, civil discussion, but rather want to traumatize people who may have had abortions or might be facing such a decision. Students were arrested for protesting, allegedly for trespassing. Afterward, the GAP organizers erected a barrier that took up most of Fairfield Way, essentially preventing students from going up to them and attempting to engage in productive discourse.
