7. It used to kind of freak me out. I finally came up with an explanation

for the phenomenon. I decided it was the cumulative effect of all the city traffic on the streets and freeways setting up a sympathetic resonance in the storm sewers, like a kind of standing wave, that traveled into the house via drain pipes and the foundation. As I could only hear it in some places I lived and not in others, I figured the places I could hear it must be nodal points in the system.

I have no idea whether my theory is actually correct (I think some people experience it in rural areas, so it’s probably not), but at least I was able to relax and ignore it.
