2. I was looking at a diagram like that

I feel like it might be the strainer sleeve or tailpiece. It seems like it was bowl shaped and the strainer, what I'd call the neck, that lines the sink drain hole, fit down into it. With all of the rust, I'm not sure what it should look like.

Thanks for adding the diagram. If Mr. Rooter changes all of the pipes, I'm going to see if I can get a cleanout plug.
