He was a captain in a Medical unit and went into the camp trying to save as many as he could. What he saw scarred him for the rest of his life. We have the letters he wrote home describing what he saw. He was a witness to the holocaust.

Meamwhile, in southeastern Poland at Auschwitz, the Nazis murdered over 50 people who shared my mother's maiden name.
