(I will have to see if I can find it on my shelf to recall the title) by a historian who interviewed many of the survivors years after the battle.

According to accounts, it was believed Custer was one of the first killed in the battle. That helped explain the ineptitude of the 7th Cavalry. The Lakota knew Custer well and though arrogant he was a decent tactician. The chaos was indicative of a leaderless unit, though to be fair had he been alive through the battle it would only have delayed the inevitable.
