"The Revolution" used the excuse of the Shah being treated in the U.S. In reality, it was a response to the Shah repressing and persecuting Islamic groups in Iran and a demand by these groups to govern the country.

But after Khomeini was seen in a cult of personality, it was inevitable that the masses would see him as a savior. (Sound familiar?)

Khomeini's lectures were disseminated by way of tapes under the radar of the Shah, the Iranian government, and sadly, our government.

Timeline:
January, 1979: The Shah left Iran for medical treatment, never to return.
February, 1979: Khomeini returned to Iran.
November, 1979: Storming of the American Embassy.
