Omaha, Lincoln gun ordinances survive repeal attempt [View all]
LINCOLN, Neb. | A bill that would have overturned local gun restrictions in Omaha and Lincoln in favor of statewide policies was defeated by a filibuster Wednesday after opponents and supporters failed to compromise.
The measure by Sen. Laura Ebke of Crete would have prevented cities from enacting gun-related ordinances that are stricter than state law.
Gun-rights groups, including the National Rifle Association, pushed hard for the measure, arguing that it would protect out-of-town gun owners who unintentionally violate a local ordinance. But many officials from the two cities opposed it, including Omaha's police union, which argued that several local ordinances help authorities fight gang violence.
"The NRA has been defeated today," said Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, who opposed the bill.
