Realistic and in depth training and practice.

The gun is not there to reassure you, to empower you or make you safe. It is there to kill someone when you shoot them.
Be sure you can comprehend and accept that fact, and then, and only then begin your training and search for weapon for home and self defense.
Factor in a good safe, and regular training into your figures as well.
