1. This sounds like something any fan of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series would enjoy.

I understand your comment about "not exactly PC," and would not be offended by language of the time/place. I would encourage you to read Paulette Jiles' books The Color of Lightning and News of the World. Ms. Jiles really knows about horses & mules and does a lot of research of time/place.
