Cole's cat is just a normal feral who lives in the canyon but comes by for food and company, although he doesn't like anyone except Pike and Cole.

OTOH, the Midnight Louie Series by Carole Nelson Douglas is one I hadn't heard of until now so I will be checking those out. Thanks.
