Go for the one-year 24 book subscription. It's pricey, but the per book price comes to around $9.50, and if your wife doesn't use it, you can.

That said, the selection can be a little weird. There's a lot of self-published books on there, including weird fantasy series, lots of erotica, an unpalatable offering of RW nutjob books, lots of kid stuff, which to my mind isn't worth it, since the books take about three minutes to read/listen to, so you might as well buy them or get them from the library.

Also, irritatingly, stuff on non-US Audible sites has stuff that's not available on the US site, but you only discover that if yoiu check out the other Audible sites.

Bottom line. I've had annual subscriptions for several years now, and I manage to download abouit 20-25 a year - well, between me, my wife, and my kids. And having the account means you don't have to gasp at the per book purchase prices.

Go for it.
