2. Just finished "Shots Fired" by C.J. Box.

It's a collection of short stories, most of them set in the contemporary West, some of them featuring Box's most familiar character, Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett. Special mention of the story entitled "Blood Knot"---all 5 pages and 1000 words of it. It's been a while since a story's ending made me gasp, but this one did it for me.
