The National Football League may be the only professional sports league to come out of the coronavirus pandemic unscathed, but three teams may find themselves turning to Plan B if the season begins as scheduled in August.
The Las Vegas Raiders and the Rams and the Chargers in Los Angeles all plan to move to new stadiums still under construction and have little wiggle room if work gets delayed or halted.
Pressure is building for the three teams and the stadiums they will play in, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and SoFi Stadium in L.A., after workers at both sites tested positive for the virus. Governor Steve Sisolak of Nevada declared the $2 billion Allegiant project and other construction “essential” in March, but a second on-site worker tested positive for coronavirus this week, and other Las Vegas construction projects, like the $1.7 billion futuristic MSG Sphere arena, were shut down over COVID-19 concerns.
Fans might get to watch the SoFi Stadium drama unfold on TV, based on an ESPN report that HBO’s “Hard Knocks” reality series, which follows an NFL team through training camp each summer, is set to feature two teams for the first time in the Rams and the Chargers. ESPN’s Adam Schefter adds the caveat: “If there’s a training camp.”
