The reward for the humans might not have been compelling enough. Also, monkeys probably do have faster reflexes.

Given how chaotic nature can be, perhaps a strategy isn't the thing most needed--simple speed and desperation probably play a part.

Also, the statement that "humans can sometimes be stupid" is a gross understatement. Humans can be stupider than animals to an epic degree.
