The island of Thera (now called Santorini,) blew up in a volcanic explosion, destroying the civilization there, and in nearby Crete.

A comic book I saw years ago, had a funnier explanation, the storyteller said a magician on Atlantis goofed, causing the island to relocate, we call it now, "California."
All that weird magic still there causes California to be so weird.
