Miranda was detained because of his association with Greenwald. You would not have been detained were you traveling with a hard drive. Greenwald did not say Miranda was not carrying Snowden files. Miranda was not allowed to call Greenwald who would have provided legal advice. Greenwald said he was not allowed to talk to "a lawyer," not that he was denied the right to talk to a lawyer the British government would provide or approve.

In my opinion the odds Greenwald would lie are low and the odds US Govt security officials would lie are moderate. Security agents are explicitly trained to say things which are not true. They have departments organized to train their agents to deceive.
