In fact, just talking about it has brought it closer to reality.

To summarize.

There is and HAS been an active Independence movement in Greenland. They can separate from Denmark via a national referendum.

I guess there hasn't been enough support to do it... UNTIL Trump started talking. Now they're hoping for a referendum THIS YEAR.

Greenland independence breaks it away from Denmark... and the US wants to be there to become their "new best friend"

New military bases... resource extraction... those 60,000 people will become quite wealthy.

It might not become a State, per se... but it will have the same effect.
