(2,183 posts)My confusion arose from your statement that modern-day Jordan is Palestine.
The idea is not without serious problems, but I can see why it would be attractive to those who subscribe to the Zionist ideology. It would make the "transfer" aka further expulsion of Palestinians from the OPT to Jordan seem more palatable, at least on its surface. So for decades it has been a pet project of the Israeli right and Likud to convince the world of its merits.
What better way to absolve Israel of responsibility for Palestinian statelessness than to claim they already have a state - Jordan, their "true" Palestinian patrimony?
Except the whole argument is specious, dishonest and not supported by historical record but relies on a selective interpretation of history and geography and a very misguided (?) reading of the British Mandate.
Jordan is not Palestine. Palestine is/was not just Jordan. That is indisputable.
But if you are going to blame the British for giving away land not theirs to give away, I fully agree. They did precisely that with the Balfour declaration establishing a Jewish national home in historic Palestine - without consulting the Palestinians of course. They had no right and look at the tragedies and bloodshed it caused.
Also speaking of land give-aways, the UN Partition of Palestine benefitted the state of Israel, which then used it to declare Independence. However it has not honoured the partition in spirit or in essence and there are grounds to believe that it never intended to.
The whole "Jordan is Palestine" argument, specious as it is, will never serve to deflect from that sad reality.
