In reply to the discussion: What's your cure when you get the hiccups? I put sugar on my tongue and drink a full glass of water without stopping. [View all]Bernardo de La Paz
(52,679 posts)7. Hiccups are air in the stomach triggering an aborted expulsion repeatedly
So ... crane your neck back a little, lean back at the waist slightly, all to extend and relax the airway. Then pay careful attention to your own body and when you feel the air coalescing, squeeze slightly your diaphragm and be sure to relax the air in that instant to let the air really be expelled.
Now that I know what is happening and what to do I rarely have hiccups, only two or three cycles. Most often I feel it starting and immediately relax and expel. Voila, no hiccups.
All the other remedies like drinking water are to shake up the system to get that expulsion going. Simpler to just tune into your body, to really feeling it somatically, deep inside. There are internal sensory nerves for exactly that purpose though usually their sensations are passed to the 'unconscious' nervous system.
Become more conscious. Many many benefits besides no hiccups.

Thank you very much for your interesting post. I will give it a try. Usually the hiccups start if I eat too fast.

Yes, then it is easy to inadvertently swallow some air if eating too fast. Commonest cause. . .nt

Thank you boonecreek. I have tried and it didn't work. I think after holding my breath, I take a large gulp of air in.

I know that this is a weird one, get a large grocery shopping bag, and put it over your head, and breath for a few
