... Newman and Redford met on the set, and became close friends. And friendship between those two meant ever more elaborate pranks.
When Redford made the Milagro Beanfield War, there was a scene in which the daughter of the protagonist was in a small store, and went to pick up a Newman's Own product off the shelf, but was quickly dissuaded by the clerk, who said, "Oh, you don't want that crap!" or words to that effect. Legend has it that they razzed each other unmercifully.
I had the pleasure of meeting Newman a few times, and he was a delightful guy. The first time was at Lime Rock race track in Connecticut. I was crewing for a friend who drove Formula Ford, and Lanny introduced me to him, He was sitting in a lawn chair next to his camper with his Nomex suit stripped off down to his waist, and he was wearing a T-shirt that read, "PAUL NEWMAN HAS SKINNY LAIGS!" It was a gift from his daughters, apparently. Pranks ran in the family, I guess.
