At one point I wanted to be an ER doc, like my brother-in-law. He had me observe in the ER for a few weeks to see if I really wanted to commit to medical school and residency, etc.

One night we had a bad motorcycle crash enter the ER, two victims... the driver on the motorcycle (who wrapped his bike around a street light pole) and his passenger.

He wore a helmet...but since he was giving her a ride home from a party... she didn't have a helmet. He "walked" away with bruises, a broken arm, cracked ribs...

She died at the ER from a massive head contusion.

She was 18.

I don't think he faced any liability for this as helmets were not required at that time. I hope it haunted him for the rest of his life.
