is that groupthink is usually a defense mechanism to extreme fear, usually of nothing.

Terrify people with threats of this and that and offer them a bunch of platitudes and the support of some group or other, most of them will follow you anywhere. It's whythe attachment is so emotional and impervious to facts or logic, any attempt to contradict the bullshit auses the terror to surface. You can't confront orthodoxy, you have to find a way to kick the fear out from under it.
